Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has seemingly done it all in the NFL. The five-time Pro Bowler has over 6,500 receiving yards and 38 touchdown receptions. As great at those stats are, fans might be surprised to hear one more stat column that Kelce has filled out.
Kelce has thrown one interception. It came on week 11 in 2017 against the New York Giants.
The Chiefs standout went on Seahawks tight end and Blue Wire podcast host Greg Olsen’s TE1 show to explain what happened that day.
“Playing against the Giants, and as Coach Reid’s installing this play, it's basically spread the defense out, throw a bubble screen to me, I act like I’m running and I throw it down the middle to Tyreek,” Kelce said.
Temporarily playing as a gunslinger was nothing new to Kelce, as he played QB back in his high school days at Cleveland Heights, throwing for over 1500 yards and 15 touchdowns. Kelce certainly didn’t forget how to throw the ball, as he threw a 45-yard bomb that was intended for wideout Demarcus Robinson. The play didn’t exactly go as the Chiefs had hoped.
“We were hoping we’d get the safeties to bite a little bit, and the safeties didn’t bite at all, so they double Tyreek.”
“Well for whatever reason, I’m not going to say (Reid) did this on purpose, but for whatever reason on the drawing on the install, it’s got a backside post. Why would it be there if it didn’t get me a progression.”
Upon seeing that Tyreek Hill was doubled, Kelce figured he could let it fly in an attempt to score.
“You know what? I dream big, I’m like, ‘if I get this thing and Tyreek’s not open, just peek,’ so sure enough I peek over and Demarcus Robinson’s scot free, rolling down the other hash.”
“I give it a good crow hop, a little base outfield, and chuck it about 50, 60 yards downfield and yeah, got picked.”
Unfortunately for Kelce and the Chiefs, they ended up losing that game in overtime 12-9.
